The wait is over, Aurora. The new Central Recreation Center, 18150 E. Vassar Place near Tower Road, will officially open May 9 with a public event, and everyone is invited.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 9, join the opening celebration with cooking and fitness demonstrations, healthy snacks and shaved ice (both while supplies last), raffles and giveaways, tours of the center and, of course, access to the entire center including pool area, all for free.

The 61,000-square-foot center provides programming for all ages, from fitness and fun to learning and doing. State-of-the-art amenities include a lap pool, an indoor wave pool, a lazy river, an interactive waterslide, an elevated indoor track, a gymnasium, top-of-the-line fitness equipment, group exercise studios, teaching kitchens, party rooms, incredible views and more.

The interactive waterslide is be the first of its kind in North America. The inner tubing of the slide is manufactured with lights and sounds, giving the slider a truly unique experience of soaring through a lit tunnel into the pool below. Similar to the slide at the Moorhead Recreation Center, this slide will also protrude from the building.

This center was truly imagined by the community. An extensive public input process began in 2016 to see how Aurorans pictured their new recreation center. With three open houses and over 200 attendees at each, the outcome was an aquatics-focused center with fitness, an indoor running track and child care as well as the need for community rooms and places for people to connect.

The $34 million bonded project is being fully funded by city marijuana tax revenues.

Aurora Fox announces 2019-20 season

The marquee at the Aurora Fox Arts Center is a tall vertical sign with the letters FOX
During the annual Aurora Fox Gala on April 27, Aurora Fox Arts Center Executive Producer Helen R. Murray announced the 35th season lineup, where all but one production are, once again, new to the Aurora-Denver area.

“With how diverse Aurora is, I want to give voice and representation to different parts of our city and to all the families who call Aurora home,” Murray said.

·    Sept. 20 to Oct. 13: “Miss You Like Hell.” A new musical about an undocumented woman facing deportation to Mexico who arrives in Philadelphia to persuade her estranged 16-year-old daughter to join her on a road trip to California.
·    Nov. 29 to Dec. 22: The Second City's "Twist Your Dickens." After a successful run last year at the Aurora Fox, this twisted version of “A Christmas Carol” returns with brand-new comedic bits.
·    Jan. 17 to Feb. 9, 2020: “The Squirrels.” An epic animal-kingdom soap opera with rebel armies, conspiracies and divided family loyalties explores classism, gentrification and racial tensions in America.
·    Feb. 21 to March 15, 2020: “Secrets of the Universe and Other Songs.” This world premiere of a reworked musical play by Marc Acito is based on the real-life friendship between Albert Einstein and American singer Marian Anderson.
·    March 13 to April 5, 2020: “For Peter Pan on Her 70th Birthday.” Fifty years after she played Peter Pan at her hometown children’s theater, Anne is casted back alongside her siblings.
·    April 17 to May 10, 2020: Disney’s “Freaky Friday the Musical.” Contemporary update of the hit Disney film.

The current season's final production, “Caroline, or Change,” ends May 5 and will be immediately followed by the Aurora Fox Cabaret Series, “This is Me,” starring Jalyn Courtenay Webb, May 10 and 11. For tickets and more information, visit AuroraFox.org.
