Free Rec Center passes for Aurora Youth

Free rec center passes for Aurora youth available at Saturday's Aurora Youth Expo
At the Aurora Youth Expo on Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Aurora youth can pick up free day passes to city recreation centers, indoor pools and outdoor pools (while supplies last), thanks to the generosity of event sponsors. Stay safe and healthy this summer!

The Aurora Youth Expo is a place to learn about job opportunities, summer programs and community resources while enjoying a bite to eat and fun activities. Featuring free food for youth, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a youth talent stage, and information sessions on mental health first aid, cybersecurity, bullying and more, the expo takes place at the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway.

Community groups and businesses with available resources for youth, especially teens, will have booths set up on the Great Lawn. Trade groups will be on hand with interactive displays such as scoreboard instruction, toolbox construction, virtual painting and welding games and an excavation demo.

The Aurora Youth Expo is coordinated by the city’s Community Relations Division, the Aurora Key Community Response Team and the Aurora Community of Faith.

Do you know your association as well as you should?

Although Colorado has thousands of common interest communities and most of the directors and community managers working with these communities feel they have an adequate grasp on the specifics surrounding their particular community, it can be an eye-opening experience to test general owner knowledge and see how much you really know (or don’t know) about your community.
Try answering the below questions to see if you know your community as well as you should. If you cannot answer 5 or more of the below questions, you have some catching up to do!
  1. Where does the association’s money come from outside of assessments?
  2. Who on the board reviews all monthly income and expenses statements?
  3. How many and whose signature(s) are required on association checks?
  4. How often does the association have an audit performed by a CPA?
  5. Do the governing documents require and audit?
  6. Is the association required to file federal and state tax returns each year, and if so, who files them?
  7. What are the total annual assessments and are they collected on a monthly or other basis?
  8. Are assessments imposed equally against all units/lots or are they weighted?
  9. Does the association’s budget process require owner approval, ratification, or both?
  10. What is the association’s process for determining its reserve needs and what portion of the assessments are allocated to reserves?
  11. Do you know the name of the law firm representing the association?
  12. Can you identify the association’s CPA?
  13. Can you identify the association’s insurance representative?
  14. Does the community have an architectural committee? What is the official title of the committee?
  15. Does the architectural committee have autonomous power to act outside the board?
  16. What types of insurance policies does the association carry and in what amounts?
  17. What are the deductibles associated with the insurance policies? What is the wind/hail deductible?
  18. In which month is the annual meeting held?
  19. Does the community have all 9 required good governance policies? Have you ever read them?
  20. How are votes in the community allocated? Are they equal or weighted?
  21. Does the community have written guidelines for contract bidding, selection, and performance?
  22. How many units/lots are in the association?
  23. What are the association and individual owners responsible for maintaining and insuring?
  24. Where are the community’s records located?
  25. Can you identify all (or most) common elements in the community?
  26. Can you identify all the contractors currently performing services for the community?
  27. What is the quorum requirement for membership meetings?
  28. What is the quorum requirement for our board meetings?
  29. Do your bylaws allow for board member proxies? (If they don’t, you can’t use them!)
  30. What does the association currently charge for late fees and interest on delinquent assessments?
How did you do? Did the results surprise you? Although this is by no means an exhaustive list of information you should know, it covers some of the basic facts that board members and community managers should be knowledgeable about.

- Click the Search Property Tax Information link
Enter ONLY the number and street name of your property address where prompted (do not enter a direction, i.e. north, south, east or west; or street type, i.e. St., Ave., Dr.)
- Click the search button
- Click on your PIN number
- Scroll down to the Property Tax Detail section, and look at the last column (Full Payment/Balance Due Amounts), and the Total Due row to see what is owed.

- Click on the View printable tax statement link

Safe use of fireworks, summer fun and more things to do in June

Staying safe with fireworks

With Independence Day around the corner, the sale of limited fireworks in the city begins June 15. Keep in mind the following information to enjoy a safe celebration of our nation’s birthday.

Legal use of fireworks in Aurora
·    The sale, possession and use of certain fireworks is legal in Aurora.
·    Fireworks can be purchased and used in Aurora only from June 15 to July 4.
·    Fireworks that DO NOT leave the ground or explode are allowed.
·    Examples of allowed fireworks are fountains, wheels, sparklers, snakes and ground spinners. Examples of prohibited fireworks are firecrackers, bottle rockets, lady fingers, mortars, and roman candles.
·    You must be age 16 or older to possess or use fireworks, unless supervised by someone age 21 or older.
·    The city’s fire chief has the right to ban the sale, use, possession or discharge of fireworks as conditions dictate.
·    Even legal fireworks can make loud noises that may be startling to those suffering from anxiety or PTSD, and to pets. Be courteous and respectful of those around you, and keep pets indoors in a safe, quiet place.

Summer family fun, food trucks and Bike to Work prep June 14

Friday, June 14, is all about summer fun at the Aurora Municipal Center Great Lawn. 

The first Summer in the City of the season –where families and children enjoy board and field games, large inflatables, crafts, face painting and more– will be combined with Food Truck Rodeo, where several of the local food trucks bring their deliciousness for all to enjoy. 

To top it off, in preparation for Bike to Work Day (June 26), the city’s Bike to Work Prep Day will also take place with giveaways, bike maintenance tips and riding resources from Way to Go. Anyone who registers at the event for Bike to Work Day will be entered into a drawing for a prize basket.

Summer in the City, Food Truck Rodeo and Bike to Work Prep Day will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Aurora Municipal Center Great Lawn, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway.

Bicycle Colorado will be offering a free bike commuter safety class in the Aurora Municipal Center’s Aurora Room from 1 to 2 p.m. Pre-registration is preferred to save a spot. 

After June 14, Summer in the City takes place every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at various parks around the city: June 19 at Del Mar Park, June 26 at Appaloosa Park, July 10 at Mission Viejo Park, July 17 at Parklane Park, July 24 at Triangle Park, July 31 at Country Lane Park, and Aug. 7 at Red-tailed Hawk Park. And Food Truck Rodeo continues on the first Friday of the month until November except for July (July 12).
